The True Costs of Safety Fence Guarding

A brief interview with Scott Orr, Vice President of Business Development and QuickGuard® Product Manager for JSNA, on the "True Costs of Safety Fence Guarding".

Question: What is the first step that a company must include to discover the true costs of purchasing safety fencing to guard a hazardous machine?

S. Orr: “First, planning and performing a risk assessment must be a part of the process prior to designing any machine safeguard fencing. JSNA understands how important risk assessments are to the overall success of the machine safeguarding solution and we can assist our customers in completing the process”.

Question: Is there normally more than one person involved in the planning of fencing for machine safeguarding?

S. Orr: “Yes, There may be a group or a committee overseeing the project. In addition to this group or committee, there will be several people from different departments including electrical and mechanical engineers, machine operators, maintenance, production managers and purchasing, who will provide input.

With all this information in hand, the group must research, understand and apply the safety standards relevant to the type of machinery to be safeguarded. This task may account for numerous hours applicable to the cost of the safeguarding project”.

Question: Can JSNA assist the committee in developing a Safety Fencing System that will meet the Safety Standards?

S. Orr: “JSNA already has a thorough understanding of these safety standards. Working with the customers’ information, preliminary sketches or CAD drawings and our exclusive SafeCAD® Software, we can provide the customer with value-added CAD drawings of a fence design that will meet all the governing safety standards.

During the design process SafeCAD® also determine sizes and locations of all doors, hatches and access openings, in position for the approval of all concerned. This will reduce the amount of hours that the group or committee will need to accomplish this task and save the company money”!

Question: What about changes or additions to the design after the original drawings are completed?

S. Orr: “With SafeCAD, design changes can be made right up to the minute the order is placed, at no cost to the customer! In addition, SafeCAD offers flexible design capabilities for future modifications as well”.

Question: After the initial design is approved and the project is signed off on, will the company need to know further actual costs including assembly labor time, all necessary materials, weight, freight charges and delivery time?

S. Orr: "JSNA will save the customer time and money by providing all the answers to these questions. Our SafeCAD Software produces printed reports showing a bill of materials, complete cut list of extrusion, brackets, steel mesh and other panel fill materials, assembly time, total weight, freight charges and delivery time"!

Question: Is it a mistake to base the ordering of safety fencing only on material costs without considering the other factors that we have discussed?

S. Orr: "The many companies who do not track all the associated costs of a fencing project are spending more time and money than they realize. The few companies, who do ask all the right questions and track these many costs, will see the benefits of looking beyond the material cost alone. I believe the more a customer knows about their overall costs, the better prepared they are to make an educated purchase decision".
