Eden E has replaced mechanical switches on filling machines from ELOPAK in order to increase reliability and ensure a high level of safety. In the past the production was interrupted at least once a week due to the failure of mechanical switches. The Pure-Pak PR90 filling machine can fill up to 9,000 milk cartons at 1.5 litres per hour. The machine is equipped with 12 Eden E sensors for harsh environments.
ELOPAK was founded in 1957 and became a major supplier of Pure-Pak® cartons in Europe. A daughter company was established in Sweden in 1961. The new Pure-Pak PR90 machine, with a capacity of 9,000 cartons per hour can be used for filling milk, fruit juice, wine, soup or sauce in 1.5 litre rectangular cartons. The new design integrates the latest filling technology, modern control system and special designs, improving cleanliness, reducing maintenance and being more user friendly. Depending on the type of filling machine up to 27 Eden E sensors are used. Each machine is also equipped with two Vital safety modules to achieve safety category 4 for the monitoring of hatches. The hatch status can be seen on a touch screen where each hatch is shown as a red area.
Eden E a non-contact safety sensor for harsh environments
Eden E is a special version of Eden being designed for harsh environments. The sensing distance has been extended to 12mm which makes it very easy to install them on a door, gate or hatch. Eden E has a safety protection class of IP69 its signals being monitored by the Jokab Safety Vital safety module. A major advantage is obtained by using Eden E, compared to a mechanical switch. Because physical keys are not required, future alignment problems due to mechanical deterioration of the assembly do not cause mechanical failure and hence safety problems. Tests show that Eden E can be used in temperatures from -70°C to +100°C. At the Skåne dairy in Malmö, Eden E has, besides providing the highest safety level, been ideal for high-pressure wash-down with cleaning detergents and disinfectant foam. Automatic cleaning is performed up to 4 times per day.

Positive experiences
Lars Bengtsson, Project engineer at ELOPAK, especially appreciates the high reliability of Eden E sensors. He still remembers the time before Eden was developed, when the production was interrupted at least once a week due to mechanical switches breaking down. The production interruptions have been responsible for significant loss in revenue over the past years. Because ELOPAK’s filling machines are used world-wide, Jokab Safety’s global presence and spare parts service has been of great value to ELOPAK and was a contributory factor in their choice of safety supplier.
